I just caught an entry on Rob Howard's Blog that links to a new MSDN article “Provider Model Design Pattern and Specification, Part 1“. I have been watching this closely as I plan on creating a couple of providers of my own and using providers in Rainbow v.Next. I want to see XML and Web Service providers for users, membership, personalization, and perhaps others. For many small sites a relational data store is total overkill for a handful of user, role, and profile items. Web site meta-data also can easilly be stored in XML and eliminate the need for other storage mechanisms.
Anyone interested in Providers for Whidbey will also want to keep an eye on Rob Howard's GotDotNet Provider Workspace. There is not much there yet, but I imagine once Beta 1 is released we will see more activity.
I suppose that with Rob's latest information on Providers I should kick off aspnetproviders.com. The intent for the domain will be a place to help everyone understand the provider pattern as well as a place to find information on available providers for Whidbey and ASP.NET 1.1 standard frameworks.
Followers of Rainbow v.Next will see the use of Whidbey providers in both ASP.NET 2.0 and 1.1 implementations.
